Jeep Grand Cherokee L MPG: What to Expect
The short answer
Up to 21 city and 26 highway MPG with the 2.0L Hurricane turbo, or 19 city and 26 highway with the 3.6L V6. EPA estimates, 2026 model year.

Three rows, seven seats, and mileage that lands in the same neighborhood as the two-row Grand Cherokee. Here is every EPA figure by engine, drive and trim, plus what those numbers actually mean on an RTP commute.

Grand Cherokee L MPG by Trim

Two engines run the whole three-row lineup. Pick the engine tab to see every trim that carries it, with the EPA figures for both rear-wheel drive and 4x4.

The Hurricane turbo makes 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It is the volume engine for 2026 and the efficiency leader in the lineup.

The 3.6L Pentastar makes 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. It stays on the entry Laredo trims for 2026.

The turbo four beats the V6 on both counts

This is the part that surprises people. The 2.0L makes 31 more horsepower and 72 more lb-ft of torque than the V6, and it still rates 2 MPG better combined. There is no efficiency-versus-power decision to agonize over here. If you want the better engine, you also get the better mileage.

What Those Numbers Mean Around the Triangle

EPA figures are a lab standard. They are useful for comparing one SUV against another, less useful for predicting your Tuesday. Here is how the Grand Cherokee L's ratings translate to real Durham driving.

The RTP commute is the easy case

From our lot on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, most Research Triangle Park offices sit about 12 miles out, and the route is mostly NC-147 and I-40. That is highway-weighted driving at steady speed, which is exactly where the L's 25 to 26 MPG highway rating lives. Commuters running that corridor daily tend to land near the top of the range rather than the combined figure.

The school-run case is the harder one

Short trips around Hope Valley, Southpoint and the Chapel Hill side of 15-501 are where any three-row SUV gives back mileage. Cold starts, stop lights and a full second and third row all pull toward the city number. If your week is mostly six-mile hops, plan around 20 to 21 MPG, not 26.

Towing changes the math entirely

The Grand Cherokee L tows up to 6,200 lbs when properly equipped, which covers most Jordan Lake and Falls Lake boat trailers. Nothing rated by the EPA reflects towing, though. Expect a meaningful drop with a trailer behind you, on either engine. That is physics, not a Jeep quirk.

If towing is a regular part of your year, tell us on the test drive. We will walk you through which trims carry the factory tow package rather than guessing from a spec sheet.

Why there is no hybrid option

Shoppers ask about the 4xe constantly, so it is worth being direct. The 4xe plug-in hybrid was a two-row Grand Cherokee model only, and Stellantis ended that program for 2026. The three-row L has never offered one. For a three-row Jeep, your choices are the Hurricane turbo and the Pentastar V6, and the turbo is the efficiency pick.

How the L compares to the two-row Grand Cherokee

The L is 11.4 inches longer and adds a third row, and it costs you about 1 MPG combined against the two-row. That is a smaller penalty than most three-row conversions carry. If you have been holding off on the L because you assumed the extra length would cost you real money at the pump, the gap is narrower than it looks. Our Grand Cherokee trim comparison breaks down what else changes between the two body styles.

Grand Cherokee L Fuel Economy Questions

What is the MPG of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L?
For 2026, the Grand Cherokee L earns an EPA-estimated 21 city and 26 highway MPG with the 2.0L Hurricane turbo four-cylinder in rear-wheel drive, and 20 city and 25 highway with 4x4. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 returns 19 city and 26 highway in rear-wheel drive, and 18 city and 25 highway with 4x4. Your actual mileage will vary with driving style, load and conditions.
Which Grand Cherokee L engine gets better gas mileage?
The 2.0L Hurricane turbo four-cylinder does, and it is not a trade-off. It rates 2 MPG better combined than the 3.6L V6 while making 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, against the V6's 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. The four-cylinder is the more powerful engine and the more efficient one at the same time.
Does 4x4 hurt the Grand Cherokee L's fuel economy?
Slightly. Adding 4x4 costs about 1 MPG combined on both engines. On the Hurricane turbo that is 23 combined in rear-wheel drive against 22 with 4x4. Given how often the Triangle gets ice on the Durham Freeway ramps in January, most local buyers decide that 1 MPG is worth the traction.
How much does the Grand Cherokee L cost to fuel on a Durham to RTP commute?
The run from our lot on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard to Research Triangle Park is roughly 12 miles each way, mostly on NC-147 and I-40. At the Hurricane turbo's 22 to 23 MPG combined, that round trip burns a little over a gallon. Highway-heavy commuters see the better end of the range, because the L's EPA highway figure sits 5 to 6 MPG above its city figure.
Is the Grand Cherokee L available as a hybrid or 4xe plug-in?
No. The 4xe plug-in hybrid was offered on the two-row Grand Cherokee only, and Stellantis ended that program for 2026. The three-row Grand Cherokee L has never had a 4xe version. Your two choices are the Hurricane turbo four-cylinder and the Pentastar V6.
Does the Grand Cherokee L get worse mileage than the two-row Grand Cherokee?
Marginally, and less than most shoppers expect. The L is 11.4 inches longer and carries a third row, and it gives up about 1 MPG combined on the V6 and roughly the same on the Hurricane turbo. You are not paying a large fuel penalty for the extra seats.
Can I see the EPA window sticker before I buy?
Yes. Every new Grand Cherokee L on our lot carries its Monroney label with that exact vehicle's EPA ratings printed on it. Ask for it on the test drive, or call us at (919) 873-4578 and we will read you the figures off the sticker of any unit in stock.
