Two answers, depending on your budget. The 2021 to 2023 JL is the best all-round used Wrangler: modern chassis, 8-speed automatic, a settled version of the platform. The 2015 to 2017 JK is the value pick: simpler, fewer screens, and the cheapest route into a genuinely capable Jeep.
What This Guide Covers
The Wrangler is one of the few vehicles where a ten-year-old example is still a real option, so "which year" is a bigger question here than it is on most SUVs. This page works through it in order.
The Three Generations You Will Actually Shop
Wrangler people talk in chassis codes, and it is worth learning three of them before you start looking. The letters tell you more about the vehicle than the model year does.
| Generation | Years | What defines it |
|---|---|---|
| TJ | 1997 to 2006 | Coil springs, round headlights, two doors only until the long-wheelbase LJ Unlimited arrived. The enthusiast's Wrangler. Buy one because you want it, not because it is practical. |
| JK | 2007 to 2018 | The first four-door Wrangler, and the one that made it a family vehicle. Simple, plentiful, easy to work on. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 arrived for 2012 and is the engine to look for. |
| JL | 2018 to present | Quieter on the highway, far better interior, 8-speed automatic widely available, and a windshield that actually folds without a fight. This is the current Wrangler. |
One quirk to know: Jeep sold the old JK alongside the new JL through 2018. A 2018 listing can be either one. Look at the grille and the dash, or just ask us to check the VIN.
Back to topThe Value Pick: Late JK, 2015 to 2017
If the budget is the constraint, this is the sweet spot. By 2015 the JK had been in production for eight years, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 had been in it for three, and Jeep had worked through the platform. These are the last years of a design the company had fully sorted.
What you get is a Wrangler with the fewest things to go wrong. Fewer screens, fewer modules, fewer sensors. Parts are everywhere and cheap. Any independent shop in Durham can work on one. If you want a Jeep you can maintain yourself, this is the generation to buy.
What you give up is highway manners. A JK is louder at 70 mph than a JL, the interior is plainer, and the infotainment is dated even by used-car standards. If most of your miles are on I-40 between Durham and Raleigh, drive a JL before you commit to a JK.

The All-Round Pick: JL, 2021 to 2023
This is the answer for most people. The JL launched for 2018, and by 2021 it was a mature product with three years of production behind it. You get the modern chassis, the much better cabin, the available 8-speed automatic, and a real set of driver-assist features, on a vehicle that has already taken its steepest depreciation.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the engine most of these carry and the one with the longest track record. The 2.0L turbo four is quicker off the line and perfectly good, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid arrived in 2021 for buyers who wanted to run errands on electricity. All three are worth driving. Do not assume the V6 is the only right answer.
These years are also where the trim ladder gets interesting on the used market. A Sahara is the comfortable one, a Rubicon has the lockers and the sway-bar disconnect, and a Willys splits the difference. If you are not going to use lockers, do not pay for them.
Daily driving with weekend range
A 2021 to 2023 four-door JL is quiet enough for a commute and still capable enough for Uwharrie or a forest road in the mountains. That combination is the whole reason people buy Wranglers.
How it was optioned
Two JLs from the same year can be very different vehicles. Check the roof type, the axle ratio, the transmission and whether it has the safety group. Ask us to pull the original build sheet on anything you are serious about.
If You Want the Newest Hardware: 2024 and Up
2024 is a real dividing line in the JL run, and it is the year to look for if technology and safety equipment matter to you. Jeep made a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen standard across the lineup, replacing the earlier choice between a 7-inch and an 8.4-inch screen. First and second row side curtain airbags became standard on every model.
The off-road hardware moved too. 2024 brought the first full-float Dana rear axle in a Wrangler, an available 100:1 crawl ratio, a factory-installed 8,000 lb Warn winch and 5,000 lb tow capability. The seven-slot grille was redrawn at the same time, which is the quickest way to spot one on the road.
A 2024 or newer Wrangler costs more than a 2021, and that is the trade. If you want the screen and the airbags, it is worth the walk up. If you want the Jeep, a 2021 does the Jeep part just as well.
Back to topWhich Year Fits Which Buyer
| If you want | Shop | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest cost of ownership | 2015 to 2017 JK | Simple, proven, and cheap to fix. The Pentastar V6 and a design Jeep had fully worked out. |
| The best all-round Wrangler | 2021 to 2023 JL | Modern chassis and cabin, 8-speed automatic, and the steepest depreciation already absorbed. |
| The most screen and safety equipment | 2024 and newer JL | Standard 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 and standard first and second row side curtain airbags. |
| The most serious off-road hardware | Rubicon, any JL year | Front and rear lockers and an electronic sway-bar disconnect. 2024 and newer add the full-float rear axle. |
| A quiet highway commuter | JL four-door with a hardtop | The longer wheelbase and the hardtop together are most of the difference in road noise. |
| Something that feels like an old Jeep | TJ, 1997 to 2006 | Smaller, rawer and more mechanical. Buy it with your eyes open and a good inspection. |
What to Check on Any Used Wrangler
The Wrangler is one of the most heavily modified vehicles on the road, which means the year matters less than the individual history. Run this list on whatever you are looking at, from any generation, at any dealership.
- The steering damper and track bar. This is the standard inspection on any vehicle with a solid front axle, Wrangler or otherwise. You are checking for play in the front-end components. A shop can do it on a lift in a few minutes, and it is worth doing before you buy rather than after.
- Water intrusion at the top. A vehicle designed to have its roof removed will always be a candidate for leaks. Look for stains at the soft-top seams, check the footwells and lift the carpet in a corner. Ask whether the Jeep has been stored outside.
- Rust underneath. North Carolina is kind to frames. A Wrangler that spent five winters on salted roads up north is a different vehicle. Get under it, or have us do it, and look at the frame rails and body mounts.
- Everything that has been changed. Ask what is not factory. A quality lift from a known brand, properly installed with the steering geometry corrected, is fine and often desirable. A cheap lift with oversized tires and no correction changes how the whole vehicle drives. Ask for receipts and who did the work.
- The service records. A Wrangler with a documented history is worth paying more for than an identical one with nothing. This matters more than the model year on the window.
Every used vehicle we retail goes through our own shop before it hits the line, and our Durham service department is staffed by technicians who work on Jeeps all day. If you find a Wrangler somewhere else and want a second opinion, bring it to us.

Two-Door or Four-Door
Buy the four-door unless you already know you want the two-door. The Unlimited's longer wheelbase makes it noticeably steadier at highway speed, and it has real back seats and a cargo area you can use. For most buyers around the Triangle that is the whole argument.
The two-door is shorter, turns tighter on a narrow trail, and parks in downtown Durham without drama. It is also the better-looking one, which is not nothing on a vehicle people buy partly because they like looking at it. The back seat, though, is a place to put a bag.
Worth knowing: before 2007 there was no four-door Wrangler at all. If you are shopping a TJ, the decision has been made for you unless you find a long-wheelbase LJ Unlimited.
Shopping a Used Wrangler Around Durham
Wranglers hold value here, and they move fast. Between the Triangle's outdoor crowd, the UNC and Duke populations, and everyone who drives to the mountains a few weekends a year, a clean used Wrangler does not sit long on any lot in this area. Come with your list ready.
Our used inventory turns over every week, so the useful move is to tell us the generation, the body style and the roof you want, and let us watch for it. We are at 4511 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd, about seven miles from the UNC campus and a straight run down 15-501 from Chapel Hill, with Cary, Apex and RTP all inside a half-hour.
If a new Wrangler is also on the table, the 2026 lineup is 4x4 on every trim with no two-wheel-drive option, and the 3.6L Pentastar V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. You can browse new Wranglers or the full new Jeep lineup in Durham, and our post on the 2027 Wrangler Laredo covers what is coming next.
Two more pages worth a look while you are deciding: how much a Jeep Wrangler weighs matters if you plan to tow one or tow with one, and our best year for the Jeep Grand Cherokee guide is the one to read if you are torn between a Wrangler and something with a quieter cabin.
Back to topUsed Jeep Wrangler Questions
What is the best year for a used Jeep Wrangler?
There are two good answers depending on your budget. For the strongest all-round package, a 2021 to 2023 JL gives you the modern chassis, the 8-speed automatic and a mature version of the platform. For the best value, a 2015 to 2017 JK is simpler, has fewer electronics and is the cheapest way into a capable Wrangler with a proven 3.6L Pentastar V6.
What is the difference between a JK and a JL Wrangler?
The JK ran from 2007 to 2018 and the JL replaced it starting in 2018. The JL is quieter on the highway, has a much better interior and screen, offers an 8-speed automatic and adds a folding windshield that is far easier to lower. The JK is simpler, cheaper, and easier to work on yourself. Both are genuinely capable off pavement.
Which used Wrangler year has the best technology?
2024 and newer. That is the year Jeep made a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen standard across the lineup, replacing the earlier choice of a 7-inch or 8.4-inch screen, and made first and second row side curtain airbags standard on every model. It also brought the first full-float Dana rear axle and an available factory Warn winch.
Should I buy a two-door or a four-door Wrangler?
Buy the four-door unless you are certain you want the two-door. The four-door Unlimited has a longer wheelbase, which makes it steadier on I-40, and it has real back seats and a usable cargo area. The two-door is shorter, more nimble on tight trails and easier to park, but the back seat is a compromise.
What should I check on any used Jeep Wrangler?
Five things. Check the steering damper and track bar for play, which is the standard inspection on any solid front axle vehicle. Look for water stains at the soft top seams and along the footwells. Check the frame and underbody for rust, especially on a Jeep that has spent winters north of here. Ask what has been modified, because a lift and oversized tires change how the whole vehicle behaves. And read the service records.
Does a modified Wrangler hurt resale value?
It depends entirely on the quality of the work. A properly installed lift from a known brand with the geometry corrected is fine, and many buyers want it. A cheap lift with no correction to the steering geometry is a problem you inherit. Ask for receipts, ask who installed it, and have it inspected before you buy.
Can I still get a used Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid?
Only used. The 4xe plug-in hybrid was offered from 2021 and is discontinued for the 2026 model year, so it is a used-market vehicle now. If you are considering one, treat the battery and charging history as part of the inspection the same way you would treat service records on any other powertrain.
